Day One: Arrival at Kerry Airport or Killarney and transfer to Lauragh (optional 12km Derren Gardens Walk)
Our driver will meet you at either Kerry Airport or Killarney train or bus station and bring you to your first guesthouse at Lauragh. Lauragh is a beautiful located coastal hamlet gorgeously situated at the foot of the Healy Pass on Kilmakilloge Harbour. Your guesthouse is close to Derreen Gardens with 12km of walking paths through sub tropical gardens. This part of Ireland has a very benign climate due to the gulf stream that despite its northerly latitude allows sub tropical plants to thrive. Dinner is at your guesthouse in Lauragh this evening.
Day Two: Lauragh to Ardgroom (13km, 120m)
Today's walk begins the Beara Way proper and the subtropical plants of Lauragh give way to open countryside and a marvelous collection of stone circles and standing stones. This demonstrates the richness of the local area in ancient times. Almost half way today you pass the Beara Gallery with its fine collection of contemporary arts and crafts. The second half of today's walk follows country roads into the small village of Ardgroom. Halfway today is the little village of with its cosy pub and Harringtons, the one stop shop for the area and also a café if you are in need of a snack. Ardgroom sits between the coast and the Slieve Miskish Mountains. Near the village lie a number of megalithic monuments, the most picturesque of which is a stone circle called Canfea. Dinner this evening is at your guesthouse in Ardgroom and you can visit the Village Inn pub for a well deserved drink or two.
Day Three: Ardgroom to Eyeries (13km, 160m)
Departing from Ardgroom today’s walk begins with a ridge hike offering great views over Kenmare Bay and even as far as the Skellig Islands. The ridge walk descends to the coast and you have a marvelous shore walk right up to the pretty village of Eyeries, recently voted the best place to live in rural Ireland.
Day Four: Eyeries to Allihies (13km, 410m)
Today’s walk is a lovely hike up over the pass and into the old mining village of Allihies. Leaving Eyeries you walk through open countryside with beautiful north west facing views over Kenmare Bay and the Ring of Kerry beyond. Allihies was a major copper mining area in the 19th century and when the mines closed many workers moved to Butte in Montana and the village maintains a close relationship with the USA. You pass many of the old mine shafts (at a safe distance) and the village opens up the westernmost region of the Beara with clear views over the Iveragh Peninsula and the nearby Skellig Islands. The old engine house for the mines is very well kept and offers a clear insight into 19th century mining in Allihies. Allihies although small is something of a cultural hub on the Beara and its excellent museum and frequent music nights, story telling and poetry nights can make this a special night on your tour.
Day Five: Allihies to Dursey Sound via the Firkeel Loop (12km, 330m)
Today's walk brings you to Dursey Sound, the westernmost tip of the Beara peninsula. The walk out of Allihies along the coast is heaven and you feel like your walking to the end of the world with the wide Atlantic panorama ahead of you. Venturing inland to the Firkeel along the coastGap and then along the southern coast approaching Dursey Sound from the south. The views today are nothing short of inspirational with your location at the edge of Europe and the eternity of the Atlantic ahead of you. Tonight's resting place is unique at the last place in Ireland to see the sun each day. Dinner is provided by your hosts and one of our most memorable moments was watching the fishing ships head out through Dursey Sound as we drifted to sleep. A unique location, a fantastic day.
Day Six: Dursey Island and optional walk to Allihies via the Garnish Loop (5-18km, 50m-490m)
After breakfast you have the opportunity to experience Ireland's only cable car that takes you across to Dursey Island. The Beara Way crosses the Island from east to west taking in the highest point on the Island with its Napoleonic Watchtower. The views back to the mainland are wonderful and experienced only by those that make it this far west. You are free to stay as long or as short as you like on the island and when you are ready to return the cable car will take you back to the mainland. Once back on the mainland, you have a choice our driver can meet you and bring you back to your guesthouse in Allihies or if you prefer you can walk there following the Garnish Looop
Day Seven: Allihies to Castletownbere (14km, 280m)
Day Eight: Short visit to Bere Island and Departure (5km, 100m)
